The World's bloodiest battle

Battle of Stalingrad (1942/1943)
It Took the lives of nearly 870,000 German,Italian, Romanian and Hungarian troops. The Soviets suffering  much larger numbers of an estimated 1.1 million Soviet troops.
There was 95000 German prisoners,only 5000 returned live.
The battle of Stalingrad was continued in 5 months ,1 week and three days.

Both groups fought in Urban setting,often shooting at each other at point blank range.
The city itself become infested by snipers,death and disease.
A hill located above the city was the site of the most merciless fighting.

The strong hold on hill changed hands 14 times. The shellfire and metal fragments churned the hillside soil to such an extent that every square meter of the soil contained 500 to 1250 metal splinters.

Both sides had issued orders of no retreat under penalty of death and no civilians were allowed to leave the city,including children.
The Average life expectancy of a soldier was just 24 hours.

Supplies was cut so civilians and soldiers used their horses as food.

After heavy loss, at last Soviets won the Battle.
